Aschkenazi Jews
Jews of Central and Eastern European origin are known as Ashkenazim. The term is derived from the medieval Hebrew name for Germany: Ashkenaz. In contrast, the Jews who trace their family history to Spain or Portugal are referred to as Sephardim, or Sephardi Jews.
